The Background Story

This bicycle was found in my third antique bicycle hunting. Actually, I was trying to find a gentlement bicycle, instead of a ladies bicycle, of which it was should to be given to Jocelyn Tomasowa, my father. But, on that day there were no good antique gentlement bicycle to be found. Anyway, I made a deal with my father, that for the time being this ladies bicycle is owned by him. But, if i am able to find a gentlement bicycle in the near future, then i will trade that gentlement bicycle with his. Therefore, I bought this ladies bicycle and it was my first experience carrying a bicycle by using airplane. I had to turn apart this bicycle and used polygon box as its package.

Gentlement TOP, Japanese Old Bicycle

This bicycle is very rusty, not in a good shape compare to other bicycles.
It doesn't have emblem on the frame. But somehow the "TOP" brand has been shaped/crafted on the frame near the steer, behind the fork. I knew "TOP" brand, from other bicycle's upper cup bracket shell, a long silvery metal, which written TOP. And this time, i found a real "TOP" Japanese bicycle.

Dames Juncker 1890s

Frame serial number 16730 4 (Under the Bottom Bracket Shell)
bought on 23rd May 2011, the sixth hunting.

A special thing about this bicycle, that is its frame at the rear, its shape is different from others. It is forming like a spoon, before the frame attached to the rear wheel. A-spoon rear frame has caught my attention. So, i bought this bicycle without knowing which brand it has. The vendor, an old wise guy, informed me that the spoon shape is the typical of Juncker.

The Background Story

As my aunty, Ronalda Tomasowa, me and my husband wished to transport our other bicycles (TOP, Fongers, and Humber sportive) from the warehouse to my aunty's house, then we saw an old dames bicycle. We came to the shop and check for its serial number on the right side frame under the saddle. But, it wasn't there. Then the vendor lifted up the bicycle, and showed us the frame number under the bottom bracket shell.

The vendor told that no one has interest to buy it, since it is so big, and old. Once again, we taught that we should rescue this bicycle, since it is old. Although we don't know which brand it has. So, my aunty suggested me to buy this bicycle. She is sure that this bicycle was antique enough, even older than her age.

History of Juncker

Juncker was one of dutch bicycle factories, which was established in 1898 in Ruwielen, Appeldoorn. The Juncker were sold in Europe, USA, and Asia, including in Indonesia. In 1968 Juncker was taken over by Gazelle.

Any kind of bicycle produced before 1910 had the best quality for metal material. But near 1910, good quality of metals were used to produced machine for the WWI. Although today they are 100 years old, but if you see it, their figure will look strong and gracious.

Any information on Juncker is difficult to be found.

This bicycle is comfortable to ride on. The steer shape is suitable for racing, and create a cozy hand grip on riding. The saddle is also as a shock breaker, that reduce bumping effects. The created comfortable has named this bicycle as a ladies Humber sport bicycle.


The Background Story

This was the first bicycle that me and my husband bought in our fifth bicycle hunting. I am interested on its steer, that is different from my other bicycles. So, I was thinking to give me a try to ride on it. But, in order to do so, i should buy it first. I just realized that its fork is different. My Gosh, it is humber. All in complete, except for its emblem.

Dames Gazelle Serie 1 dated 1905

The Background Story

This bicycle is my first old bicycle, as a gift from my husband. He already bought Wearwell, a British made. So, he promised me, if i visit him to the city, where he was relocated for work, then he will buy an old ladies bicycle in that city.

So, during the school holiday, i went to that city. This was our second old bicycle hunting. And at the second day, he took me to several places. At the last place, it was raining, and he picked for me the cheapest old bicycle there. Hem, i was sad at that time. I wish for the branded bicycle, in good condition. Due to the rain, i had no other choice, but to agree with him. He took me and that bicycle to the mechanic to repair the break and check the wheel.

At the mechanic, a young man came and asked how much is this bicycle. I answered him, that this is a cheap price. For me, it doesn't matter, weather it is branded or not. As long it is good for ride, that's o.k. for me. He stood on my bicycle for a while. I was confused, what things that he admired from my ugly old bicycle.

The next morning my husband awoke me, just to show that he found the Gazelle words marked on the frame. It is barely seen by bare eyes. I had to use small lamp to discover the marked Gazelle words. Since then, i searched on internet about any details of my old rusty gazelle. I am happy that I found you, my old rusty Gazelle.

Written Words of Gazelle

At the frame under the steer, it is written Gazelle as its brand. The clear written words, which are smooth and so original. The brand that was crafted on the frame, just like at the picture, are difficult to be a faked one. The brand was crafted on the frame during its production at the factory in Netherlands. Based on the type of crafted brand at the frame, it will determined how old is a Gazelle bicycle.

The early production of Gazelle, they didn't attach any emblem on it. It was only the words Gazelle, as looked at the attached picture. Starting on the 4th series, Gazelle finally attached their emblem on it.



Serial Number 23329

Based on http://www.sepedaonthel.com/rangka_sepeda.php, if you enter the brand "Gazelle" and the frame serial number 23329, then it shows that this bicycle was produced in 1905.

From the serial number and the written brand "Gazelle", it is known that this bicycle was the 2nd Generation of Gazelle, in which in 1905.During this period, Gazelle still imported some bicycle from Great Britain, which caused the serial number is on the left side of the saddle, and searching on the trade mark that can be used in the market. After the third series, finally they could have their own factory in Netherlands and created their emblem and assigned permanently their serial number on the right side of frame under the saddle.

The joined bracket for the saddle on the frame is the mark for the sport type of Gazelle. It is welded during the production type.

Lepper branded Saddle

An old leather at this saddle and the type of it, quite describing that this saddle is old. The shape of this saddle is in accordance with saddle produced by Royal Enfield bicycles in 1900s.

Royal Enfield bicycle had issued six types of saddle. The smallest one for women are very similiar with the saddle on the left picture.
